Corten steel and its patina
Corten steel is a modified steel to which phosphorus, copper, chromium and nickel are added. This composition allows it to rust on the surface but never right through: it can stay outdoors for several decades without deteriorating. Its weathering process takes 2 years:
- 1 to 3 months: the cabinet becomes covered with a yellow/orange layer of surface rust. Take care with wooden and concrete terraces: during this phase, rust run-off may stain your floor.
- 3 to 6 months: the rust layer becomes darker and harder.
- 6 months to 1 year: the colour evens out, the rust layer becomes very solid and there is no more run-off.
- 1 to 2 years: the patina reaches its final colour, a more or less dark brown. Every Corten sheet is unique, and so is its colour.
